The War of the Worlds, originally released in 1983 for the Atari 8-bit game console, evokes many of the elements from the suspenseful H. G. Wells novel of the same name. The game follows the novel’s intriguing yet harrowing narrative with its adaptation of a dangerous alien invasion thoroughly engaging players for hours of thrilling and challenging gameplay.

Players begin The War Worlds by taking control of a protagonist named George Herbert who has endeavored to fend off advancing alien invasions and protect a ray gun that pilots a spacecraft. First, the player must construct a barricade in order to ward off the alien assault. This entails strategically distributing limited resources in order to have the greatest chance of combination for success.

The action within the game progresses with the alien attack wherein the player must guide the spacecraft with the ray gun to consecutively shoot down the enemy from the sky. This is a considerably fun yet difficult task as the alien forces are relentless and are equipped with powerful weapons. The added twist of the game is the need to find energy cells to fuel the ray gun. Without these, the player would not be able to vanquish every advancing alien.

Following is a race against the clock as players have to deactivate the alien barriers with the remaining energy cells whilst still trying to vanquish the enemies from the sky. The War of the Worlds plays much like a real-time strategy game with its resource management combined with its high-paced arcade-style gameplay.

The War of the Worlds has been hailed as one of the most beloved classic Atari 8-bit games of all time with its captivating story, challenging strategic resource management, and fast-paced arcade-style gameplay making it a must have for all gaming libraries.
