Description Spirit of the Stones

In October 1983, author John Worsley hid 40 diamond talismans and one larger one, 'The Great Eye of Wight', throughout the Isle of Wight. Once hidden, he published a book containing clues to the location of the diamonds. Anyone who read the book could find them and the diamonds found allowed the discoverer to receive royalties on sales of the book.

In 1984, Commodore released a game based on the book and the treasure hunt idea. The story was about a cabin boy named Mark who was sailing with smugglers in 1763, but after landing on the Isle of Wight, they are ambushed by the Revenue Service for the 40 diamonds and the large talisman the smugglers had. In the confusion, Mark manages to flee with the diamonds, but is captured and killed. His spirit, realizing the evil of these diamonds, scattered them all over the island. Over the years, people have traveled the length and breadth of the island, but have been unable to unravel its secrets.

You are a treasure hunter and you have come to the island to search for the diamonds. You begin your adventure on the island itself with a portion of the island shown from above at a high angle. The screen scrolls as you move around looking for the 21 buildings containing the diamonds. As you walk around there are many dead spirits roaming the island and if you touch one then part of your PSI bar decreases. If the bar is empty, it is game over.

You can enter any building you find. The game now becomes a platformer with the entire level displayed on the screen. You must avoid the spirits once again as you try to retrieve the diamonds placed on various platforms. When falling from a height you will also lose PSI energy. All diamonds collected increase your PSI, but will also reveal a letter at the top of the screen, as well as the occasional rune. Once all diamonds are collected, a message and the secret meaning of the runes in 'The Great Eye of Wight' will be revealed.
